Easy on the socks

This is a plea to all you clever knitters out there. I am overcome with the urge to knit socks. Now I'm not sure where this comes from. It's not as if it's Winter and my toes are cold (although with this weather you might think it was). It's just that I want - no need to knit socks. Problem is that although I can knit, albeit at a basic level - I am terrified of using circular needles. Seriously how will I work out how many rows I've done?? So if anyone out there can point me in the direction of a simple and very easy pattern I would be most grateful.

I have loads of patterns and love to use the magic loop technique rather than four needles, it really is easy! I'm off out today but I'll check in to see what you've come up with. Just google magic loop, I use an 80cm Addi Turbos for my socks(in fact, I love these circulars so much I have them an loads of sizes and use them instead of straight needles now). You just have to make some, I'm with you...now where are my socks I started a while ago?....

Good to have you back!!! Hope you're feeling less bedraggled. I'm a useless knitter but I visit a blog called Cornflower where Karen has made some lovely socks!

Hi there! Thanks for your comments on my blog. I'm glad you loved the dyeing - it's addictive isn't it? Good luck with the sock knitting!

Whenever I have bought Opal 4ply Sock Yarn I have been given a free simple Sock Pattern and Gift Pouch. The first time was after a search on Ebay.

I'm certainly not the one to ask! I started knitting my first pair of socks about two years ago and then got stuck! Looking forward to hearing about how you get on. GOOD LUCK!

i also want to learn to knit socks - in time for a cold winter in scotland!
perhaps we should have a sock knitting group for those of us who are scared by the whole thought of circular needles!
we could share in each others frustrations and no doubt slightly odd shaped socks!

My Mum likes to knit socks but I think she does them on the knitting machine. I'm a bit lost on this one but I LOVE this picture of the socks. Good Luck

I use 4 needles for socks, tried the magic loop method once and got into a right old mess. As for an easy pattern, try the Slip Up Socks on Posh Yarn's site. They're lovely to do - just haven't got myself round to making the second one yet...

Would love to have hand knitted socks but it does seem a bit daunting.

Hi, I don't work socks on a circular needle I prefer double pointed, but to remember the first stitch I just tie a scrap bit of yarn , cotton is best into a loop and pop it on the needle after the first stitch, though not before as it falls off as you knit your way around. There are loads of easy patterns for socks, I started with the patons learn to knit book, although the pattern is boring after the first time you pick up the basics reallt quickly.
